How well do you know your hips and knees?

The hips and knees are the largest joints in your body. They work together to provide maximum mobility while also supporting your body’s weight. Needless to say, they have a large task ahead of them, and it is critical that they complete it successfully.

Did you know that the second most common cause of chronic pain is knee pain? A variety of ligaments and muscles make up your knee. Failure to address this type of pain can have serious consequences in your life.

Your hip joint is made up of two parts: the femoral head and the acetabulum. The acetabulum is the socket into which the femoral head fits, and the femoral head is a round, “ball-shaped” bone. The structures that connect the femoral head to the acetabulum are known as ligaments.

Hips, like knees, are complex structures that can cause pain at any age.

The most common causes of knee pain

Knee pain can be caused by a number of injuries or diseases. A car accident, a bad fall, or a sports-related injury can also cause it. Some of the most common types of knee pain are as follows:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Anterior wounds
  • Fractures near the knee
  • Ligament strains and sprains
  • Gout
  • Overuse (example: too much running on rough, hard ground)

Knee pain can impair your overall mobility, strength, and muscle control.

The most common causes of hip pain

You may feel pain in your groin or right inside your hip if you have hip joint problems. If you have pain on the outside of your hip, it is most likely caused by tendons, muscles, and ligaments. It may be difficult for you to stand if you have hip pain

The following medical conditions can also cause hip pain:

  • Sprains
  • Fracture of the hip
  • Sciatica
  • Arthritis rheumatoid
  • Bursitis
  • Osteoarthritis

Occupational Therapy Can Help You Get Rid of Knee and Hip Pain

If you have any of the above conditions or symptoms, you should see a physical or occupational therapist. Your therapist will conduct an in-depth evaluation of your gait, range of motion measurements, and mobility to create a personalized treatment plan for your hip or knee pain.

Every treatment plan is unique. Heat or ice therapy, therapeutic exercises, or ultrasound therapy may be necessary for your specific condition. Joint mobilization techniques, according to research, can help with both long-term and short-term hip problems. Even better, there is usually a general improvement in mobility!

If you are suffering from hip or knee pain, please contact Wise Physical Therapy to set up an appointment with one of our skilled Anchorage, AK therapists. We can help you reduce or even eliminate your pain, allowing you to resume your previous lifestyle.
